MeStissage

MeStissage

It’s always a pleasure to hear Teofilo Chantre again. Since his first album, Terra & Cretcheu, released in 1993 by Lusafrica, it was clear that he was one of the most talented Cape Verdean songwriters of his generation. Teofilo’s precise pen is full of images, and he has written many songs for Césaria Evora since the ones which charmed us on her album Miss Perfumado. On this, his fifth album, he has opened up to many new influences. His music is still rooted in languorous coladeiras and bitter-sweet mornas – immersed in the sweet pain of longing that is saudade. But, like other Cape Verdean artists – including Mario Lucio and Mayra Andrade – Teofilo Chantre has this time looked to Brazil.

A sensual Cape Verdean bossa feel runs throughout the album, as in ‘Un Monde Hororable’, where he pays homage to Brazil, fado and the French singer Claude Nougaro. Teofilo has lived in France for over 25 years and he now often writes songs in French. He feels an affinity with fellow free spirits, such as Bernard Lavilliers, with whom he duets on ‘Oli’Me Ma Bô’, a song which carries us to a late-night bar in São Vicente, glass of rum in hand.

But MeStissage succeeds because it is a varied album, something which it has to be said is not always true of Teofilo’s work. Here, some tracks take unexpected turns. ‘Entre-temps’ reels off an inventory, à la Prévert, of the technological words which have invaded our vocabulary and our (real) lives. In ‘Restau de l’Exil’, Teofilo sings about the anguish of a life far from home. The final words of the song are the perfect ending: “Sleep peacefully nostalgia/everybody is going to dance...”
